Join Our Team as a Lead Teacher

Orcas Montessori School is seeking a dedicated and Montessori-certified Lead Teacher to join our preschool program. This full-time position offers the opportunity to guide a mixed-age classroom in a supportive, collaborative, and community-centered school environment.

Position Overview

The Lead Montessori Teacher is responsible for planning and implementing a high-quality Montessori program that supports the academic, social, and emotional development of each child. The Lead Teacher works closely with assistant teachers, administration, and families to maintain a consistent, calm, and engaging classroom community.

  • Schedule: Full-time (40 hours per week)

  • Program: Preschool / Primary (mixed-age)

  • Reports to: Director

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain a developmentally appropriate Montessori classroom environment

  • Present Montessori lessons aligned with children’s individual readiness and interests

  • Observe, document, and assess student progress

  • Foster independence, concentration, and respectful behavior

  • Maintain consistent classroom routines and expectations

  • Communicate regularly and professionally with families

  • Collaborate with assistants, specialists, and administration

  • Ensure compliance with Washington State licensing and school policies

  • Support the school’s mission and community values

 

Required Qualifications

  • Montessori certification (AMI, AMS, or equivalent)

  • Experience leading a Montessori preschool or primary classroom

  • Strong understanding of child development and Montessori philosophy

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment

  • Must meet Washington State licensing requirements, including background checks

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a nonprofit or small school setting

  • Familiarity with documentation tools such as Transparent Classroom or similar

  • Passion for outdoor learning and community-based education
